Enjoy perfect boating holidays in Scotland by travelling through the Highlands by Dipika Patel
When you choose boating holidays in the UK for your annual getaway you will be rewarded with the chance to explore some of the most beautiful parts of the British Isles while doing as much – or as little – as you please, all at your own pace.
Boating holidays in Scotland are a case in point, as this is some of the most Beautiful Landscape in the country, attracting countless visitors every year.
However, the best thing about exploring this region by canal is that you get to see even more, rather than being tied to the place where you have booked your accommodation.
If you are looking for the ideal destination for such a trip then why not journey down the Caledonian Canal, which will allow you to enjoy the best of the Highlands? The waterway forms part of the Great Glen Fault, a geological feature that over time has filled with water, making it the perfect spot for boating.
As you make your way along this route – which travels from Fort William on the west coast to Inverness in the east – you will pass several activity centres that make up the Great Glen Water Park.
These are ideal places to moor up your boat for the day and raise your adrenalin levels by having a go at a number of thrilling activities.
You could get back on the water for a spot of canoeing, kayaking, wakeboarding, white water rafting or water skiing, or stick to dry land and go quad biking, mountain biking, pony trekking or hiking.
Whatever you choose, it is sure to be one of the experiences you most enjoy on a trip where no one day is ever the same as the next.
Indeed, a pair of walking boots is an absolute must on Scotland canal holidays as your journey will take you through striking countryside and past some of the most famous landmarks in the world – including Loch Ness and Ben Nevis – all of which could entice you to spend a little more time on two feet.
Of course, if you prefer to relax onboard your boat, you will still be able to take in all those amazing views so make sure you bring a camera.
On your journey you will pass many places of interest where you may want to moor up and while away a few hours.
For some city chic Inverness is certainly hard to beat as here you can hit the shops, enjoy a fancy meal, sample a glass of Scotch or two at the local pubs or pay a visit to the castle.
Further along the waterway is Drumnadrochit, which is the ideal place to stop if you want to spend the day at Loch Ness. Make sure you keep an eye out for Nessie, the monster long believed to live in this huge body of water.
On a headland overlooking the loch sits Urquhart Castle and although it is in ruins now you are sure to be able to imagine how it looked back in its medieval heyday when it was one of the most important strongholds in Scotland.
A little further along is the popular village of Fort Augustus, home of the Clansman Centre where you can learn more about how some of Scotland’s earliest inhabitants lived.
You can also take a cruise of Loch Ness from here, while a little further along the waterway you will pass through the narrow Loch Oich, where you will have the chance to spot some slightly smaller local wildlife, including an abundance of amphibians and reptiles.
Of course, a trip to Fort William is a must and you may even wish to extend your time here in order to tackle Ben Nevis, the tallest peak in the UK.
But even if you don’t feel you can manage this hike, the surrounding scenery of Glen Nevis will more than make up for it. For many this is what the Scottish countryside is all about, as spectacular waterfalls tumble into valleys below and heather blankets the lush green hills.
The movie Braveheart was filmed here and you may even recognise some of the locations as you amble around.
All-in-all, this could be the perfect way for you to round off your UK boat holidays for another year.
