Landscape Design: An Efficient and Innovative Approach to Reducing Costs

This article focuses upon the area of landscape design and identifies methods in which one can approach the design and utilise effective ways to reduce project costs. The article also analyses a few ways in which the design process can help towards tackling the path to a greener and more sustainable environment.

With the current economic climate many of us are being forced to take new approaches when it comes to things such as home improvements. In addition to this, it is in our best interests to utilise readily available resources that will help tackle the growing threat that is extreme climate change, and also contribute to money savings in the long term.

At this particular moment in time, people are more conscientious of monetary and environmental factors, and as a society we are aware of how certain aspects of our lifestyles are directly related to the detrimental impacts upon the environment. Although these issues do not always go hand in hand, it is important for the individual to weigh up the best option. For example, when it comes to things such as landscape design, it is important to try and source materials locally, where feasible. By doing this, it may be slightly more expensive, however, one is consequently minimising the carbon emissions incurred from transportation, whilst also supporting a local business.

Unfortunately, not every person feels inclined for one reason or another, to opt for the latter option. However, there are other ways in which people can save, one of which is by utilising the three R’s; Reduce, Re-use, Recycle.

Bearing this in mind, Agouti Design, a small design consultancy based in Devon, has recently been tackling these issues head-on in their latest landscape design. Using a range of principles as described earlier, Agouti has established the needs of the client, and effectively applied innovative and efficient design to produce a desirable and environmentally conscientious solution.

In relation to the prior reference regarding the utilisation of existing resources, the use of composters and water butts are an effective way of doing your bit for the environment. Many local authorities will provide people within the local area with composters for a heavily subsidised rate; however, there are a couple of prominent issues that could be potentially putting people off making the investment. Firstly, the existing range of composters and water butts are typically very spatially consuming and therefore inappropriate for a large amount of households. Secondly, a large majority are very unsightly, and are undesirable to place within ones residence. To avoid these issues, one solution would be to tailor these items to an appropriate size for one’s residence as Agouti have done, and in other cases, a strategic planting scheme in order to mask such objects. Ultimately, the inclusion of these items within one’s garden provides many great benefits that not only help the environment but also are good ways of saving money.

The design incorporates an innovative use of re-cycled materials, as well as other locally sourced timber and plants. Ultimately, the emphasis for this landscape was upon functionality and user interaction, and this efficient design delivers both an appealing and affordable solution to the consumer.

Agouti Design Devon and their landscape design concept is one of many innovative ways in which environmental issues may need to be addressed in future to create an ergonomic and effective transition to a more environmentally pro-active existence.
